The enormous potential of multifunctional bilayer wound dressings in various medical interventions for wound healing has led to decades of exploration into this field of medicine. However, it is usually difficult to synthesize a single hydrogel with all the required capabilities simultaneously. This paper proposes a bilayer model with an outer layer intended for hydrogel wound treatment. By adding gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and tannic acid (TA) to the hydrogel composition and using polyvinyl alcohol-carboxymethyl chitosan (PVA-CMCs) foam layer as supports, a photocrosslinkable hydrogel with an optimal formulation was created. The hydrogels were then examined using a range of analytical procedures, including mechanical testing, rheology, chemical characterization, and in vitro and in vivo tests. The resulting bilayer wound dressing has many desirable properties, namely uniform adhesion and quick crosslinking by UV light. When used against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains, bilayer wound dressings demonstrated broad antibacterial efficacy. In bilayer wound dressings with GelMA and TA, better wound healing was observed. Those without these elements showed less effectiveness in healing wounds. Additionally, encouraging collagen production and reducing wound infection has a major therapeutic impact on wounds. The results of this study could have a significant impact on the development of better-performing wound dressings.

Scorpion venoms identified as agents with anti-tumor and anti-angiogenic features. Tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a pivotal role in the process of tumorigenesis, tumor development, and polarization of M2 phenotype tumor associated macrophages (TAMs). M2 polarized cells are associated with tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis. The fractionation process was performed by gel filtration chromatography on a Sephadex G50 column. To elucidate whether scorpion venom can alter macrophage polarization, we treated interleukin (IL)-4-polarized M2 cells with isolated fractions from Mesobuthus eupeus. Next, we evaluated the cytokine production and specific markers expression for M2 and M1 phenotype using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), respectively. The phagocytic capacity of macrophages was also assessed. In addition, the migration assay and MTT analysis were performed to investigate the effects of reprogrammed macrophages on the CT-26 colon cancer cells. The results indicated that F1 fraction of venom significantly upregulated the levels and expression of M1-associated cytokines and markers, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (p < 0.001), IL-1 (p < 0.01), interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) (p < 0.0001), induced nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) (p < 0.0001), and CD86 (p < 0.0001), and downregulated M2-related markers, including transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß) (p < 0.05), IL-10 (p < 0.05), Fizz1 (p < 0.0001), arginase-1 (Arg-1) (p < 0.0001), and CD206 (p < 0.001). The macrophage phagocytic capacity was enhanced after treatment with F1 fraction (p < 0.01). Moreover, incubation of CT-26 cell line with conditioned media of F1-treated macrophages suppressed migration (p < 0.0001) and proliferation (p < 0.01) of tumor cells. In conclusion, our findings demonstrated the potential of Mesobuthus eupeus venom in M2-to-M1 macrophage polarization as a promising therapeutic approach against proliferation and metastasis of colon cancer cells.

Although the association of individual foods and nutrients with glioma have been investigated, studies on the association of major dietary patterns and glioma are scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the association between major dietary patterns and risk of glioma in a group of Iranian adults. In this hospital-based case-control design, we recruited 128 newly diagnosed glioma cases and 256 controls in Tehran from 2009 to 2011. A Willett-format-validated 126-item semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess participants' dietary intake. Factor analysis was used to identify major dietary patterns. We identified 3 major dietary patterns using factor analysis: high protein, vegetarian and western dietary pattern. After several adjustments for potential confounders, adherence to the high protein dietary pattern was inversely associated with risk of glioma (OR: 0.47; 95% CI: 0.23, 0.95). Consumption of vegetarian dietary pattern was also associated with a reduced risk of glioma (OR: 0.16; 95% CI: 0.07, 0.34). Greater adherence to the western dietary pattern was associated with a greater chance of glioma (OR: 3.30; 95% CI: 1.52, 7.17). We found that high protein, vegetarian and western dietary pattern were significantly associated with glioma risk. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Several studies have revealed that healthcare nanomaterials are widely used in numerous areas of dentistry, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and repair. Nanomaterials in dental cosmetics are utilized to enhance the efficacy of toothpaste and other mouthwashes. Nanoparticles are added to toothpastes for a variety of reasons, including dental decay prevention, remineralization, hypersensitivity reduction, brightening, and antibacterial qualities. In this review, the benefits and uses of many common nanomaterials found in toothpaste are outlined. Additionally, the capacity and clinical applications of nanoparticles as anti-bacterial, whitening, hypersensitivity, and remineralizing agents in the treatment of dental problems and periodontitis are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a common skin issue that typically occurs during adolescence. It causes long-lasting redness and swelling in the skin. An alternative approach to treating acne could involve using a cosmetic facial mask containing herbal ingredients such as Curcumin and Rosa Damascena extract for its antibacterial properties. AIMS: This study aims to create and try out a peel-off mask gel made from Curcumin and R. Damascena extract. This gel is intended to have the ability to kill bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Propionibacterium acnes and remove dead cells from the skin surface. METHODS: The peel-off mask was made using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in 8% and 10% as solidifier. The evaluation of peel-off masks comprises the examination of physiochemical and mechanical aspects. Furthermore, their longevity, effectiveness, and antibacterial properties are also considered. RESULTS: The white color, pleasant smell, and soft texture were the defining features of the peel-off gel mask. The changes in PVA affect the pH level, thickness, and how quickly the peel-off mask dries. The stability test found that the peel-off mask had no significant physical changes when exposed to freezing and thawing. However, there were some differences in color and separation when using the real-time method. A prepared peel-off mask containing 10% PVA and curcumin works best against P. acne. The amount of PVA in the formula affected the physical and chemical qualities, but it did not impact on the antibacterial abilities of the peel-off mask gel. The best formula that gives the best results uses 10% PVA + curcumin. CONCLUSIONS: Using the Curcumin and R. Damascena extract in the creation of the peel-off mask gel ensures its efficacy and safety for skin application.

Manipulation of the structure of covalent organic frameworks at the molecular level is an efficient strategy to shift their biological, physicochemical, optical, and electrical properties in the desired windows. In this work, we report on a new method to construct chiral triazine frameworks using metal-driven polymerization for enantiodiscrimination. The nucleophilic substitution reaction between melamine and cyanuric chloride was performed in the presence of PdCl2, ZnCl2, and CuCl2 as chirality-directing agents. Palladium, with the ability of planar complex formation, was able to assemble monomers in two-dimensions and drive the reaction in two directions, leading to a two-dimensional triazine network with several micrometers lateral size. Nonplanar arrangements of monomers in the presence of ZnCl2 and CuCl2, however, resulted in calix and bouquet structures, respectively. While 2D and bouquet structures showed strong negative and positive bands in the CD spectra, respectively, their calix counterparts displayed long-range weak negative bands. In spite of the ability of both calix and bouquet networks to load l-histidine 35 and 50% more than d-histidine from pure enantiomers, respectively, only calix counterparts were able to take up this enantiomer (78%) from the racemic mixture. The two-dimensional polytriazine network did not show any specific interactions with pure enantiomers or their racemic mixtures.

Synthesis of fully triazine frameworks (C3N3) by metal catalyzed reactions at high temperatures results in carbonized and less-defined structures. Moreover, metal impurities affect the physicochemical, optical and electrical properties of the synthesized frameworks, dramatically. In this work, two-dimensional C3N3 (2DC3N3) has been synthesized by in situ catalyst-free copolymerization of sodium cyanide and cyanuric chloride, as cheap and commercially available precursors, at ambient conditions on gram scale. Reaction between sodium cyanide and cyanuric chloride resulted in electron-poor polyfunctional intermediates, which converted to 2DC3N3 with several hundred micrometers lateral size at ambient conditions upon [2 + 2+2] cyclotrimerization. 2DC3N3 sheets, in bulk and individually, showed strong fluorescence with 63% quantum yield and sensitive to small objects such as dyes and metal ions. The sensitivity of 2DC3N3 emission to foreign objects was used to detect low concentration of water impurities. Due to the high negative surface charge (-37.7 mV) and dispersion in aqueous solutions, they demonstrated a high potential to remove positively charged dyes from water, exemplified by excellent removal efficiency (>99%) for methylene blue. Taking advantage of the straightforward production and strong interactions with dyes and metal ions, 2DC3N3 was integrated in filters and used for the fast detection and efficient removal of water impurities.

Obesity has become a common global problem. Some obese people can be metabolically healthy. Gene-environment interaction can be important in this context. This study aimed to assess the interaction between dietary fat quality indices and the Melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) gene in metabolically healthy and unhealthy overweight and obese women. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 279 women with overweight and obesity. The definition of metabolically healthy and unhealthy phenotypes was done according to Karelis criteria. Dietary assessment was done using a 147-item validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and dietary fat quality was assessed by cholesterol-saturated fat index (CSI) and the ratio of omega-6/omega-3 (N6/N3) essential fatty acids. MC4R was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. A generalized linear model was used to evaluate the interaction between dietary fat quality indices and the MC4R gene in both crude and adjusted models. Study subjects with higher ratio of N6/N3 had higher homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA IR) index (P = 0.03) and other variables showed no difference according to the tertile of CSI and N6/N3. Participants with the C allele of MC4R rs17782313 had lower height (P < 0.001) and higher HOMA index (P = 0.01). We found that the CC genotype of MC4R interacts with the N6/N3 ratio on the metabolically unhealthy phenotype in the crude model (ß = 9.94, CI 2.49-17.39, P = 0.009) and even after adjustment for all confounders (ß = 9.002, CI 1.15-16.85, P = 0.02, ß = - 12.12, CI 2.79-21.46, P = 0.01). The data of this study can justify one inconsistency observed in society, regarding dietary recommendations about metabolic health status. Those with CC genotype, are more likely to have an unhealthy phenotype with an increase in N6/N3 as one fat quality indices than those who do not have CC genotype. We found the interaction of dietary fat quality indices such as N6/N3 and the MC4R gene in metabolically unhealthy overweight and obese women.

Chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases such as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are known as inflammatory bowel disorders (IBD). Patients with inflammatory bowel illnesses are more susceptible to viral infections. In people with IBD, viral infections have emerged as a significant issue. Viral infections are often difficult to identify and have a high morbidity and fatality rate. We reviewed studies on viral infections and IBD, concentrating on Cytomegalovirus (CMV), SARS-CoV-2, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), enteric viruses, and hepatitis B virus (HBV). Also, the effect of IBD on these viral infections is discussed. These data suggest that patients with IBD are more likely to get viral infections. As a result, practitioners should be aware of the increased risk of viral infections in inflammatory bowel disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery is performed worldwide to treat severe cases of cardiovascular diseases. Statins have shown controversial effects on complications after cardiac surgeries. We aimed to investigate the effect of preoperative statin therapy on the frequency of postoperative mortality, renal, and neurological complications. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, the database of patients operated on in two hospitals in southern Iran during 2008-2019 was used to compare preoperative statin use with no use on the composite outcome of mortality, renal, and neurological complications as well as on each component of the composite, separately. Effects of low dose (<40 mg simvastatin equivalence) vs. high dose (≥40 mg) statins were also evaluated. Confounders that could affect the outcomes were considered in the logistic regression model, and multiple imputation techniques were used to categorize patients with unknown statin dose use as either high or low-dose users. RESULTS: Of total 7329 patients, 17.6% of statin users and 17% of non-statin users developed the composite outcome (P=0.51). Statin use had no statistically significant association with the composite outcome (aRR 1.01 [95% CI: 0.88-1.16]). There was no significant association with mortality [aRR: 0.75 (95% CI: 0.34-1.69)], neurological [aRR: 1.25 (95% CI: 0.77-2.12)], or renal complications [aRR: 1.03 (95% CI 0.90-1.19)] after surgery. Neither low nor high doses had any statistically significant effect on the composite or any of its components. CONCLUSIONS: In this large study, preoperative statin use, either high dose or low dose, did not affect short-term postoperative mortality, neurological, or renal complications.

Since the pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, many people have been affected in different ways. The majority of infected people experience mild to moderate symptoms and recover without the need for hospitalization. However, in some affected people, it may lead to catastrophic disease. The severity of COVID-19 infection is widely influenced by co-morbidities, immune system functions, and extra-pulmonary organ injuries. Since the emergence of COVID-19, multi-organ involvement has been documented. In order to implement preventative and protective measures, full attention to potential organ injuries is required. Most existing articles and review papers are focused on a specific organ system, and their numbers are growing. In this review paper, attempts were made to collect review papers and articles published on seven organ system involvements in COVID-19 infection published till 15 July and highlight conclusions and managements of all affected organs. We tried to add to the medical knowledge on COVID-19, pointing out its multi-organ system impact. Finally, we tried to facilitate access to organized information and optimum conclusion by representing review tables for each organ system. Besides, this review article can clarify and magnify the empty research space easily for future investigations.

Objective: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most frequent dysrhythmias observed following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Several studies have shown the beneficial effects of curcumin on cardiovascular diseases; however, there is no clinical trial to examine its effect on POAF. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study was designed to evaluate the prophylactic effects of a nano-formulation of curcumin (SinaCurcumin™) versus placebo on POAF and levels of biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in patients undergoing CABG surgery. Materials and Methods: A total of 234 eligible patients were randomized to receive 240 mg curcumin nano-formulation or placebo three days prior to the surgery and on the first four postoperative days. The occurrence of POAF was monitored for at least 96 hr after the surgery. Also, C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels were assessed at baseline and the end of the study. Results: Analyses were done in the intention-to-treat population. No significant difference was observed in the occurrence of POAF between the treatment (9.5%) and placebo (11.5%) groups. Also, curcumin intervention did not alter serum concentration of the hs-CRP, MDA, or GSH in comparison with placebo. Conclusion: In conclusion, it seems that perioperative treatment with SinaCurcumin™ did not prevent POAF after CABG surgery.

Two-dimensional nanomaterials are emerging as promising candidates for a wide range of biomedical applications including tissue engineering, biosensing, pathogen incapacitation, wound healing, and gene and drug delivery. Graphene, due to its high surface area, photothermal property, high loading capacity, and efficient cellular uptake, is at the forefront of these materials and plays a key role in this multidisciplinary research field. Poor water dispersibility and low functionality of graphene, however, hamper its hybridization into new nanostructures for future nanomedicine. Functionalization of graphene, either by covalent or non-covalent methods, is the most useful strategy to improve its dispersion in water and functionality as well as processability into new materials and devices. In this review, recent advances in functionalization of graphene derivatives by different (macro)molecules for future biomedical applications are reported and explained. In particular, hydrophilic functionalization of graphene and graphene oxide (GO) to improve their water dispersibility and physicochemical properties is discussed. We have focused on the anticancer drug delivery of polyfunctional graphene sheets.

A new colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for fluoride anion based on calix [4]arene bearing four sulfonamide-fluorenone subunits on the upper rim was conveniently synthesized. It showed a remarkable color change as well as the fluorescence quenching upon addition of F- even in the presence of a wide range of anions in DMSO. The binding property of L with F- was studied by a combination of various spectroscopic techniques, such as absorption and emission titration, Job's plot and 1H NMR titration. It is anticipated that this design with functional group attached to upper rim of calix[4]arene platform can provide a new approach for the development of F- chemosensor.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of high-dose vitamin C on cardiac reperfusion injury and plasma levels of creatine kinase-muscle/brain (CK-MB), troponin I, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS: This is a double-blind randomized clinical trial study. Fifty patients (50-80 years old) who had CABG surgery were selected. The intervention group received 5 g of intravenous vitamin C before anesthesia induction and 5 g of vitamin C in cardioplegic solution. The control group received the same amount of placebo (normal saline). Arterial blood samples were taken to determine the serum levels of CK-MB, troponin I, and LDH enzymes. Left ventricular ejection fraction was measured and hemodynamic parameters were recorded at intervals. RESULTS: High doses of vitamin C in the treatment group led to improvement of ventricular function (ejection fraction [EF]) and low Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay. The cardiac enzymes level in the vitamin C group was lower than in the control group. These changes were not significant between the groups in different time intervals (anesthesia induction, end of bypass, 6 h after surgery, and 24 h after surgery) for CK-MB, LDH, and troponin I. Hemodynamic parameters, hematocrit, potassium, urinary output, blood transfusion, arrhythmia, and inotropic support showed no significant difference between the groups. CONCLUSION: Vitamin C has significantly improved the patients' ventricular function (EF) 72 h after surgery and reduced the length of ICU stay. No significant changes in cardiac biomarkers, including CK-MB, troponin I, and LDH, were seen over time in each group. IRCT CODE: IRCT2016053019470N33.

BACKGROUND: The hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin is a public health problem. Immunological responses to penicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics can be classified into immediate and non-immediate responses. The immediate hypersensitivity is mediated by IgE; however, the non-immediate sensitivity is facilitated by other isotypes of antibody or T lymphocytes. OBJECTIVE: This research detected the non-IgE antibody value against penicillin in allergic and normal people. METHODS: Thirty-eight samples from patients with positive or negative intradermal skin testing results of penicillin allergy were included in this study. The total antibody and IgM levels against penicillin G were defined by in-house ELISA test. RESULTS: The results showed a significant (P< 0.05) elevation in total immunoglobulin and non-IgM anti-penicillin antibody of sensitive groups; however, the anti-penicillin IgM was significantly greater in non-sensitive peoples. CONCLUSIONS: Although the sensitized people to penicillin cannot be certainly detected with the total antibody, specific IgG and IgM value against penicillin, these values are good indicators for prediction of immediate and late response of the immune system to penicillin.

BACKGROUND: Many elements such as immunosuppressive, chemotactic and anti-inflammatory peptide that could effect on human and animals physiologic system were determined in venom. This study evaluated the use of Mesobuthus eupeus scorpion venom fractions as an immunomodulator. METHODS: The venom fractions collected from Khuzestan Province in South West of Iran were purified by ion exchange chromatography. Elution of the bounded elements was done by using a linear gradient of sodium chloride (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 2 molar). The fractions were analyzed by Bradford spectrophotometric and SDS-PAGE method. After treatments of chicken with venom fractions and sheep red blood cell (SRBC), direct haemagglutination test in microtiter plate was used for the determination of the chicken SRBC antibody titer. RESULTS: The fraction released by NaCl 1.25M had the highest protein concentration. The highest and lowest antibody titer was determined at the fifth (NaCl 0.75 molar) and seventh fraction (NaCl 1.25 molar), respectively. CONCLUSION: Different protein profile of isolated fractions, were associated with various effect on immune response. Both enhancing and suppressing of the chicken humoral immune response to SRBC were observed after M. eupeus faction's venom treatment. It is due to biological functions of venom components. Purification of these elements would provide the new agents for immune responses manipulation.

Functionalization of calix[4]arene with amidofluorene moieties at the lower rim led to formation of the 1,3-diconjugate of calix[4]arene L as a novel fluorescent chemosensor for Cu(2+). The receptor molecule L exhibited a pronounced selectivity towards Cu(2+) over other mono and divalent ions. The formation of the complex between L and Cu(2+) was evaluated by absorption, fluorescence and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The sensor L showed a remarkable color change from colorless to purple and a fluorescence quenching only upon interaction with Cu(2+). The 1:1 stoichiometry of the obtained complex has been determined by Job's plot. The association constant determined by fluorescence titration was found to be 1.8 × 10(6) M(-1). The sensor showed a linear response toward Cu(2+) in the concentration range from 1 to 10 µM with a detection limit of 9.6 × 10(-8) M.
